China clarification on Brahmaputra dam The relations between India and China have once again started to sour. The reason for this is China's announcement to build the world's largest dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) river. This hydropower dam to be built in Tibet may have an adverse effect on India, about which the Foreign Ministry has also expressed concern.
After India's objection, China has also given clarification and said that there is no threat to anyone from this.
What is India worried about?
Actually, the Yarlung river flows from China through Tibet and comes to India. Here it is called Brahmaputra. After this, it goes to Bangladesh via Arunachal and Assam. China is building this dam near the border of Arunachal in the lower part of the Yarlung river coming from Tibet.
Being the biggest dam, a huge amount of water can be stored in it. Now when the dam is built, the flow of the river water will be in the hands of China. If less amount of water is released, there will be a shortage of water in India and if more water is released, there can be floods.
What explanation did China give?
China has assured that this project has been studied for decades. It says that it will not harm anyone. China said that only clean energy will be produced from it and full attention will be paid to the safety of the downstream areas.
India had earlier raised this issue with China. India had said that this dam could cause damage to the lower regions. The Foreign Ministry had also said that this could lead to climate change, environmental damage and water crisis in the lower regions.
