London. Conservative party in Trouble British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party is in trouble. One of Sunak's officials has been accused of betting. It is alleged that the official had placed a bet on the general election even before the date was announced. Britain's gambling regulator is investigating this.

Chief Data Officer accused

  • Britain's Gambling Commission has already launched an investigation into two Conservative election candidates and the party's campaign director over allegations of betting on the July 4 election date, British newspaper the Sunday Times reported.
  • The newspaper named the official as Nick Mason, the chief data officer at the Conservative Party. Mason has yet to comment on the allegations.
  • The newspaper quoted a spokesman for Mason as saying he denied any wrongdoing.
  • Mason has also taken leave following the allegations, the Sunday Times reported, citing a statement from the Conservative Party.

Opposition attacks on Sunak

The growing allegations regarding the scam have given Sunak's opposition Labour Party a new opportunity to attack him. At the same time, Sunak's party, which is already lagging behind in opinion polls in the general election, has suffered a new setback.

Sunak said- I am getting angry now

Sunak said on Thursday he was "extremely angry" to hear about the allegations against his party colleagues. He described it as a serious matter. At the same time, one of the Conservative candidates named in the scandal, Craig Williams, has already apologized for the mistake and the party's campaign director Tony Lee has taken a leave of absence.

Minister compares election betting to partygate

On the other hand, Sunak's housing minister Michael Gove compared the betting allegations to the Partygate scandal in an interview to a newspaper.

He said that this is the most damaging thing. Gove is withdrawing from this election after being an MP for 14 years. He said that the party suffered during the partygate and it is damaging here too.

Let us tell you that Prime Minister Johnson was forced to step down in 2022 after public anger over the revelations of parties held in Downing Street when the rest of the country was in lockdown during the pandemic. Now another senior leader of the Conservative Party has been caught in the latest scandal.
