The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Tuesday said the upper stage of the PSLV-37 rocket, which launched a record 104 satellites in 2017, or PS4, has returned to Earth's atmosphere as predicted.
PSLV-C37 was launched on February 15, 2017 carrying Cartosat-2D and 103 other satellites. After delivering the satellites to their orbits, the upper part of the rocket (PS4) remained in an orbit of about 470 x 3 494 km size. It was regularly monitored and its altitude gradually decreased.
constant monitoring
The orbital altitude decrease was monitored regularly from September 2024. PS4 returned to the atmosphere on October 6. Re-entry of rocket parts into the atmosphere within eight years of launch is in line with the guidelines of the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC).
As per the instructions, the inactive object should remain in low Earth orbit (LEO) for 25 years after the mission. ISRO will continue its efforts to achieve the objectives of a debris-free space mission by the year 2030.
