US President-elect Donald Trump and Xi Jinping spoke by phone late Friday night, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

 

This conversation took place ahead of Trump's swearing-in ceremony on January 20. US-China relations are expected to be the main focus in Trump's second term.

 

Trump confirmed on Truth Social that he spoke to Chinese President Xi Jinping. He said that among other things, trade, fentanyl and TikTok were discussed. President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the world more peaceful and safe.

 

Trump threatens tariffs

Trump has threatened to impose tariffs of 60 per cent on all Chinese imports into the US. But he has previously praised his relationship with Xi and suggested China could help mediate international crises such as the war in Ukraine.

 

Chinese President will not attend the swearing-in ceremony

The Chinese President will not attend Trump's swearing-in ceremony. China will be represented by Vice President Han Zheng at the event. Trump said in an interview on Meet the Press in December that he has been communicating with Xi since winning the election.

He said he had a very good relationship with the Chinese leader. He said they did not discuss Taiwan but discussed other issues.

 

Taiwan is linked to China's sovereignty: Xi Jinping

Xi Jinping told Trump that it is natural for two big countries with different circumstances to have some differences. He said that the important thing is to respect each other's interests and concerns and find appropriate solutions.

 

He said that the question of Taiwan is related to China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The US side needs to consider it judiciously. Let us tell you that China considers Taiwan as its part. It has vowed to include it in its territory. Both the leaders have expressed hope that China and US relations will have a good start.
