President Yoon Suk-Yol surprised everyone by suddenly announcing martial law in South Korea on Tuesday. After the events that continued till late night, the MPs voted against the martial law. Also, the opposition parties presented a proposal to impeach President Yol on Wednesday.

 

The main opposition Democratic Party and five other smaller opposition parties, including the Rebuilding Korea Party and the Reform Party, submitted the motion to the National Assembly. The impeachment motion was signed by 190 opposition lawmakers and one independent MP.

 

No support from the ruling party

However, no ruling party legislator supported it. Opposition parties plan to report on the proposal in a parliamentary plenary session on Thursday and hold a vote on Friday or Saturday.

 

According to the law, an impeachment motion must be put to a vote between 24 and 72 hours after the motion is notified to the plenary session. Representative Shin Chang-sik of the Rebuilding Korea Party said the parties have not yet decided whether to vote immediately or at another time.

 

a two-thirds majority is needed

An impeachment motion requires a two-thirds majority to pass parliament. The opposition in the 300-member National Assembly would need eight votes from the ruling People's Power Party to pass the bill.

 

Main opposition Democratic Party MP Kim Yong Min said that we cannot ignore this illegal martial law. We cannot let democracy end. On Wednesday, Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun apologized to the people and offered his resignation over the incident.

 

Elections will be held within 60 days

Meanwhile, the question is arising that if President Yoon Suk Yol resigns from the post or is removed, what will be the political situation in South Korea? It is believed that in such a situation, Prime Minister Han Duk Soo will take over until the new elections to be held within 60 days.

 

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he welcomes Yol's decision to repeal the martial law declaration. There has been no response from North Korea so far regarding this incident in the neighboring country.
