South Korea's Constitutional Court has ruled to dismiss the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duk-soo and restore his powers, marking the latest twist in the country's political turmoil following his impeachment as acting president more than two months ago.

Han took over as acting leader, replacing President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was impeached last year over her declaration of short-lived martial law. Thousands of supporters and protesters gathered in Seoul, South Korea, on Saturday last week.

He assumed the post of PM two weeks ago

Prime Minister Han lasted less than two weeks and was impeached and suspended on December 27 after clashing with the opposition-led parliament over his refusal to appoint three more judges to the Constitutional Court. The court's judges ruled by a majority of seven to one to dismiss the impeachment.

What were the allegations against PM Han Duck-soo?

Han, 75, had served in leadership positions for more than three decades under five presidents, both conservative and liberal. Still, the opposition-led parliament accused him of not doing enough to thwart Yoon's decision to declare martial law, a charge he denied.

Impeachment against President Yoon Suk-Yeol

  • The Constitutional Court said on Monday it had decided to overturn Han's impeachment,
  • The court has not yet ruled on the impeachment of President Yoon.
  • Now in such a situation, if the court upholds Yoon's impeachment, then South Korea will have to hold elections for a new president.
  • If the court rules in his favor, Yoon will be reinstated in office and regain his presidential powers.
