According to mythology, the demons Shumbh and Nishumbh defeated the gods with the help of Chand-Mund and Raktbeej and started ruling the three worlds. After this, Indra and other gods prayed to Goddess Durga and to kill them, the mother took the form of Goddess Chamunda, after which Mother Kali killed Chand, Mund and Raktbeej and again established peace in the whole world.
