New Delhi. The situation in Afghanistan, the Ukraine conflict and enhancing security cooperation among SCO member countries are likely to be discussed at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit to be held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, on Thursday. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent India at the summit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not attending the summit.

These important issues can be discussed

The Ministry of External Affairs said that India's priorities in the SCO are shaped by the Prime Minister's vision of a 'secure' SCO. 'Secure' stands for Security, Economic Cooperation, Connectivity, Unity, Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and Environmental Security. The Ministry of External Affairs said, "At the summit, the leaders are expected to review the organization's activities over the past two decades and discuss the status and prospects of multilateral cooperation."

These countries are members of SCO

"The meeting is also expected to discuss topical issues of regional and international importance," it said in a statement. The SCO members include India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. It is an influential economic and security organisation that has emerged as one of the largest inter-regional international organisations.

Kazakhstan is hosting this summit as the current chair of this group. India was the chair of SCO last year. It hosted the SCO summit through digital medium in July last year. SCO was established by the presidents of Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan at a summit in Shanghai in 2001.
