Oral Health Care Tips:  Tea, coffee, cold drinks and red wine are some of the drinks that people like to drink the most. From morning tea-coffee to drinking cold drinks or wine while meeting friends outside has become an important part of people's diet. Now in such a situation the question arises that what effect do these drinks have on teeth.

Which of these drinks (Red Wine vs Coffee side effects) stains the teeth the most and what damage can they cause to the teeth (soft drinks teeth damage). Let's know about this from Dr. Shilpa Khullar Sood (Head of the Department of Dentistry at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad).

Which drink stains teeth the most?

Dr. Sood said that the most staining is caused by red wine. Red wine stains the tooth enamel, that is, from the upper covering to the roots. This is due to the chromogen content, acidity and tannins present in it.

Due to these, the stain of red wine stays on the teeth for a long time. Drinking red wine for a long time can permanently discolor the outer surface of the teeth.

Coffee and cold drinks are also harmful...

However, coffee and black cold drinks can also cause staining of teeth. Coffee contains chromogens and black cold drinks are highly pigmented. This causes staining of teeth. Although coffee causes discoloration only on the upper surface of the teeth, it can also be gradual and last for a long time.

What other harm can these drinks cause?

Not only this, these drinks can cause not only staining but also many other damages to the teeth. The acidity and sugar in these drinks can cause many dental problems. Let us know about this from Dr. Suman Yadav (Head of Maxillofacial and Dental Department, Newmed Hospital, Noida).

Dr. Yadav says that the sugar and acid present in these drinks cause tooth decay. This can cause enamel erosion i.e. damage to the upper layer of the tooth and cavities.

In this, the problem of cavities can be caused mostly by cold drinks. On the other hand, coffee causes the mouth to become dry and saliva production to decrease. Due to this, the pH level of the mouth can decrease, which is harmful for the teeth.

Red wine can also cause enamel erosion, as alcohol increases the risk of oral dehydration. This can lead to bad breath and gum problems.

How can we protect ourselves?

Therefore, to avoid these, Dr. Shilpa Sood suggests using a straw. This will reduce the contact of these drinks with your teeth. Also, it is important to rinse with water after drinking these drinks so that their particles do not stick to the teeth and gums. Apart from this, it is also important to take care of proper oral hygiene .
