In a significant move to enhance passenger safety and manage crowd flow, the Ministry of Railways has directed RITES Ltd, a public sector engineering consultancy, to design permanent holding areas at five key railway stations: New Delhi, Anand Vihar, Ghaziabad, Varanasi, and Ayodhya. This initiative aims to prevent overcrowding and improve passenger management, especially in light of recent incidents. The holding areas will be integrated into the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, a program focused on modernizing railway stations with world-class amenities. The decision follows a tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, underscoring the urgent need for better crowd control measures. Once the model is finalized, the plan is to expand this approach to 60 high-footfall stations across the country. In addition to creating holding areas, the Railways intend to close all unauthorized access points to these stations to further enhance security and streamline passenger movement. This comprehensive strategy reflects the Railways' commitment to improving infrastructure and ensuring passenger safety through proactive crowd management solutions.
