Story of Pausha Putrada Ekadashi

It is mentioned in Sanatan scriptures that King Suketumaan had no children. King Suketumaan and Queen Shaibya were unhappy for this. They were worried about who would save their ancestors after their death? Who would give salvation to their ancestors. Due to lack of an heir, their ancestors would have to wander from door to door. Their souls would neither get peace nor attain salvation.

Thinking all this, King Suketumaan left his kingdom and went to the forest. He met the sages in the forest. At that time, King Suketumaan told his sorrow (troubles). Then the sages advised King Suketumaan to keep the fast of Paush Putrada Ekadashi. Knowing this, King Suketumaan returned to his kingdom. After this, King Suketumaan and Queen Shaibya kept the fast of Paush Putrada Ekadashi and worshiped Lord Vishnu. Later, King Suketumaan got a son. Since then, this festival is celebrated every year in the month of Paush.
