Bangladesh is going through a period of tension these days. After the removal of Sheikh Hasina from the post, a lot of violence was seen against Hindus in Bangladesh. Meanwhile, political tensions in Bangladesh increased again on Wednesday, when a prominent student group demanded the resignation of the country's nominal President Mohammad Shahabuddin. In fact, it is being said that some such comments were made by him, which seem to raise questions about the resignation of former President Sheikh Hasina in the month of August. The interim government is going to hold a cabinet meeting on Thursday to discuss the issue.
Political turmoil begins again in Bangladesh
The student group known as the 'Anti-Discrimination Student Movement' has set a two-day deadline for President Mohammad Shahabuddin to step down. Hundreds of protesters rallied in the capital Dhaka on Tuesday, while hundreds of others attempted to storm the presidential palace Bangabhaban. The new political turmoil began when Shahabuddin told a Bengali language newspaper earlier this week that he had not seen Hasina's resignation letter since she fled to India amid a student-led uprising in August. After Hasina stepped down on August 5, an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took power and formed the government in Bangladesh.
The student organization demanded the resignation of the president
Shahabuddin, in his interview to Manab Zamin daily newspaper, said that he has only heard about Hasina's resignation but has not seen the actual resignation letter, a statement which enraged the Yunus-led government and student activists, prompting them to demand her resignation. Earlier, Shahabuddin had said in his first address to the nation on August 5 that Hasina has submitted her resignation to the President and he has received it. According to Bangladesh's constitution, an elected prime minister has to submit his resignation in writing to the President.
