Mumbai: There has been a new twist in the extortion case registered against former Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh. Businessman Ketan Tanna, who filed a complaint of extortion against Singh, has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court appealing to cancel the case. Tanna claimed that he was pressured to file a complaint against Parambir Singh. The businessman claimed in the petition that he was threatened that if he did not file a complaint against the former Mumbai Police Commissioner, he would be implicated in false cases.

Hearing expected on October 8

Ketan Tanna said that he wants to correct his 'blunder' and be free from the burden he feels on his conscience. Tanna filed the petition earlier this week and it is expected to be heard on October 8. The businessman alleged in his petition that at the time when Parambir Singh was embroiled in a dispute with the then Maha Vikas Aghadi or MVA coalition government of Maharashtra, a conspiracy was being hatched against this senior IPS officer.

Complaint was lodged with Thane Police

The businessman claimed that he was called outside the bungalow of then Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and the then DGP Sanjay Pandey told him to file an extortion complaint against Param Bir Singh. He filed a complaint with the Thane police in July 2021 and alleged that when Singh was the Thane Police Commissioner, he was called to the Anti-Extortion Cell office between January 2018 and February 2019 and extorted Rs 1.25 crore from him by threatening to implicate him in serious criminal cases.

'Couldn't bring out the truth at that time'

The businessman said in his petition that he was 'under pressure to file a complaint and he could not bring out the truth, but now he wants to act on the voice of his conscience.' Tanna said that is why he has requested to cancel the case.
