Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, has decided to lay off about 3600 of its employees. The company has mentioned this in its internal memo.

All these employees will be fired due to their poor work performance. However, new people will be hired in their place. Only 5 percent of the company's employees will be affected by Mark Zuckerberg's decision.

Layoffs based on work performance

According to September data, Meta has around 72,400 employees. Mark Zuckerberg defended this decision saying that better talent will be available and new people will be able to join the company.

Layoffs based on performance are a common process in American companies. Last week, Microsoft also laid off 1 percent of its workforce. All these people were included in the list of poor performance.

Growing closer to Republicans

The talk of lay-offs in Meta has come up just a few days before Donald Trump's swearing-in. For some time now, Mark Zuckerberg has been getting closer to Republican leaders.

The dinner meeting with Trump and the inclusion of a Republican as Meta's public affairs head are due to this closeness.

Fact checking team also ended

  • Last week, Zuckerberg also announced that he was shutting down the company's fact-checking program in the US. This program was facing a lot of criticism from conservatives.
  • Under this program, the company used to fact check the misinformation spreading on its platform. But conservatives used to allege that their voice was being censored.
  • Under the new system, Meta users will also be able to add context to their posts, as is done on Elon Musk-owned social media platform X.
  • The company has also relaxed content moderation rules on Facebook and Instagram.
