A devastating earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, killing more than 1,000 people. A Myanmar Muslim organization said more than 700 worshippers were killed in the 7.7 magnitude quake that struck the country at the time of prayers during the holy month of Ramadan.

Tun Kyi, a member of the steering committee of the Spring Revolution Myanmar Muslim Network, said on Monday that about 60 mosques were damaged or destroyed in the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck near Mandalay, the country's second-largest city. It was not immediately clear whether those killed in the mosques were included in the official toll of more than 1,700 people killed so far in the quake.

Many mosques collapsed during the earthquake

Videos posted on the Irrawaddy online news site showed several mosques collapsing during the quake and people fleeing areas. Tun Kyi said most of the mosques damaged were older buildings that were more vulnerable to earthquakes.

30 storey building demolished

The devastation caused by the earthquake can be estimated from the fact that a 30-storey building collapsed in Thailand's capital Bangkok, in which 43 workers are trapped. Emergency has been declared in Bangkok after the earthquake.

India has sent about 15 tonnes of relief material to Myanmar via C130J aircraft to help Myanmar. Despite Myanmar being under military rule, Trump has said that the US will help.

Buddhist temple reduced to rubble in Mandalay

A centuries-old Buddhist pagoda in Mandalay has been reduced to rubble. Teams and equipment have been flown in from other countries, but are hampered by damage to those cities' airports, according to reports.

Workers in Naypyitaw were trying to repair damaged roads, while power, phone and internet services were still cut off across much of the city. In Bangkok, rescue workers were working frantically to rescue people trapped under the rubble of a 30-story skyscraper.
