Berlin: A Lufthansa flight from Argentina's capital Buenos Aires to Germany's Frankfurt encountered sudden atmospheric turbulence over the Atlantic, injuring 11 people on board. "Unfortunately five passengers and six crew members suffered minor injuries," a Lufthansa spokesman said, confirming a report by dpa news agency.
329 passengers on board
The spokesperson said the safety of the flight was not in danger at any time. According to the airline, the injured were treated immediately after the plane landed safely at its destination on Tuesday. There were 329 passengers and 19 crew members on board the Boeing 747-8. The company said the turbulence was mild. It is noteworthy that in May, a Singapore Airlines passenger plane faced turbulence over the Irrawaddy Basin in Myanmar, in which a passenger died of a heart attack.
What is turbulence?
Turbulence causes the plane to jerk in the air or during flight. This situation arises due to sudden changes in the pressure and speed of the air flow. The plane suddenly starts moving rapidly. Turbulence can sometimes cause mild or sometimes very severe jerks. The most important reason for turbulence is considered to be bad weather.
Lufthansa flight has faced turbulence before
Last year also, Lufthansa flight (number- 469) from Texas, USA to Frankfurt, Germany had to face turbulence. After this, the plane was landed safely at the airport in Virginia. Seven people on board the plane had to be hospitalized. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Airbus A330 had reported severe turbulence at an altitude of 37,000 feet while flying over Tennessee.
How dangerous is turbulence
Experts believe that climate change is also having an impact. Sudden changes in the weather cause difficulties for the pilot. Turbulence can cause injuries to passengers. In most cases, it is not so dangerous. Current aircraft are capable of withstanding turbulence to a great extent. Due to modern sensors, it can be identified earlier. If there is time, the pilot can also change the flight path. Damage caused by turbulence can be reduced by alerting the passengers.
