London : The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has rewarded the exceptional bravery and courage of Indian sailors in its 2024 Awards for Gallantry at Sea. The IMO Council in its proceedings on July 10, 2024, commended Captain Avinash Rawat and the crew of the oil tanker Marlin Luanda for their exceptional bravery, leadership, and determination. The efforts of the crew, with vital support from assisting naval forces, were vital in ensuring the safety of the crew, saving the ship, and averting a potential environmental disaster.

Additionally, Captain Brijesh Nambiar and the crew of Indian Naval Ship INS Visakhapatnam have been awarded a commendation certificate for their remarkable courage and resolve in participating in the firefighting efforts on board Marlin Luanda.

While carrying a highly hazardous cargo, the ship was attacked by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels with an anti-ship ballistic missile. Their effective use of equipment and personnel to extinguish the fire and seal a critical hull breach saved lives and prevented a serious marine pollution incident. The annual awards ceremony will be held at IMO Headquarters in London on 2 December 2024 during the 109th session of the Maritime Safety Committee.
