New Delhi. Recently (9 June) Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu arrived in India to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. There are reports that the parliamentary committee has announced to review the three agreements made with India. The special thing is that this announcement was made when Muizzu was in India.
What are these three agreements?
These three agreements include hydrographic survey, Uthuru Thilafalhu Dockyard to be built with grant assistance from India and Dornier aircraft gifted by India to the Maldives defence forces for humanitarian, search and rescue operations.
According to Maldives media reports, Ahmed Ajan, MP for Central Hithadhoo constituency, said that today the National Security Services Committee of Parliament has decided to conduct a parliamentary inquiry to investigate actions by President Solih's administration that undermine the sovereignty and independence of the Maldives.
He proposed launching a parliamentary inquiry alleging that the actions of the previous government affected the country's independence and sovereignty.
Muizzu's government had announced last year that it was not going to renew the agreement with the Indian Navy for joint hydrographic surveys in Maldivian waters.
Muizzu also met President Murmu
He attended Modi's swearing-in ceremony on Sunday and met President Murmu on Monday where he expressed gratitude for India's continued support to the Maldives.
He conveyed that he looked forward to further strengthening the existing ties, his office said.
The controversy began when three deputy ministers used offensive language on social media platforms against a post about Prime Minister Modi's visit to Lakshadweep, in which he celebrated the natural beauty of the islands and its potential attraction for Indian tourists. Two former presidents - Ibrahim Solih and Mohamed Nasheed - had strongly condemned the ministers' comments.
