Kangana Ranaut, who is playing the role of Indira Gandhi in the film "Emergency", says she considered the former prime minister a very strong woman, but after deep study, she now believes she was "weak" and "did not believe in herself". Kangana, a first-time Lok Sabha member from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, often makes headlines for her controversial statements.
'There isn't a single director I would like to work with'
She also said that today no director is worthy of her. Kangana Ranaut said in an interview to PTI-Bhasha before the release of the popular film "Emergency", "I am saying with great pride that today there is not a single director in the film industry with whom I want to work, because they do not have that quality...that I can agree to work with them.
'Indira Gandhi had many crutches around her'
Kangana has directed and produced the film "Emergency", which depicts the 21-month Emergency imposed in 1975 by the then Prime Minister. Ranaut said, “Until I started working on this film, I thought Indira Gandhi was very strong but when I studied, I understood that she was the complete opposite. This strengthened my belief that the weaker you are, the more control you want. She was a very weak person. She did not believe in herself and she was really weak.”
He said, “She had a lot of crutches around her and was constantly trying to justify herself in some way or the other. She was heavily dependent on many people, one of them being Sanjay Gandhi.”
When Priyanka Gandhi was talked to about the film
The BJP MP said she did not make any changes from her side in the portrayal of Indira Gandhi and the Emergency in her film. Ranaut also said she met Indira Gandhi's granddaughter and MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Parliament and talked about the film. Recalling her brief interaction with Priyanka, the Congress MP from Wayanad, Ranaut said, "I met Mrs Priyanka Gandhi in Parliament and she praised my work and my hair. So I said, 'You know, I have made a film Emergency. Maybe you should watch it.' She said, 'Okay, maybe.'"
The film Emergency will be released on January 17. The film was supposed to release months ago but could not be released due to censor certificate and allegations of misrepresenting the Sikh community. The film was originally scheduled to release on September 6, 2024.
