According to mythology, Swayambhu Manu and Shatarupa were the first man and woman on earth. They handed over their kingdom to their son and went to Naimisharanya and started meditating on Lord Vasudeva. Both of them performed severe penance to get Lord Vishnu as their son. Pleased with their penance, Lord Vishnu appeared before them and asked them to ask for a boon. Then Swayambhu Manu and Shatarupa told Lord Vishnu that it is their wish that you become their son.
Lord Vishnu gave a boon
Fulfilling the wish of both, Lord Shri Hari gave a boon saying that in Treta Yuga, both of you will be born as the Maharaja and Maharani of Ayodhya and my seventh incarnation i.e. Shri Ram will be born as your son. As a result of this boon, in the next birth, Swayambhu Manu became King Dasharath and his wife Shatarupa became Mother Kaushalya. Lord Shri Ram was born as their son.
Kaikeyi also expressed her wish
It is also said that King Dasharath became Vasudev and Goddess Kaushalya became Devaki during the Krishna incarnation. Kaikeyi had told Lord Rama that I want to have you as a son in my next birth, so Kaikeyi got her next birth as Yashoda and she also got the good fortune of becoming the mother of Lord Krishna.
