The Election Commission (ECI) has appointed new District Magistrates (DM) in four districts of West Bengal. This decision of ECI has come after the order to remove the DM of East Midnapore, East Bardhaman, Jhargram, and Birbhum districts. ECI has appointed Joyoshi Das Gupta for Midnapore, Moumita Godara Basu for Jhargram, K. Radhika Iyer for East Bardhaman, and Shashank Sethi for Birbhum. The officers who were removed from these districts included Bidhan Chandra Roy, Tanveer Afzal, Purnendu Kumar Majhi, and Sunil Aggarwal. All of them were from the West Bengal Civil Service cadre.

Recently, the Election Commission had issued orders to remove West Bengal Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar and BMC Commissioner Iqbal Chahal, and some other senior officials of various states. ECI had also ordered the removal of some key officials of six states. The Election Commission had asked the Home Secretaries in six states Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand to step down. Apart from this, secretaries of the General Administrative Department in Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh were removed.

DGP had come into the limelight on the Sandeshkhali issue.
It is noteworthy that after the Sandeshkhali issue came to light, questions were raised on the lax attitude of the police, in which the DGP was also questioned and his name came in the headlines. An atmosphere of unrest had arisen in the state on behalf of women protesters against the alleged atrocities committed by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates.

Transfer of officers who have completed three years
The Election Commission had also directed all state governments to transfer those officers involved in election-related work who have completed three years or are in their home districts. Meanwhile, Maharashtra had not complied with the instructions in respect of some Municipal Commissioners and some Additional/Deputy Municipal Commissioners. After this, the Election Commission expressed displeasure with the Chief Secretary and transferred the BMC Commissioner and Additional/Deputy Commissioners and directed them to report by 6 pm that day.
