The number of Indian cardinals rises to six
21 new cardinals from countries across the world were inducted in this ceremony held at the famous St. Peter's Basilica. The Pope addressed the gathering and formally handed over the hat and ring to the priests who were made cardinals. After that, he gave certificates along with prayers. After the appointment of Koovakad, the total number of Indian cardinals in the Vatican has now become six.
The Indian government sent a delegation led by Union Minister George Kurien to attend the ceremony. The Indian delegation also met Pope Francis before the ceremony began. George Koovakad was born on 11 August 1973 in Thiruvananthapuram. He was ordained a priest on 24 July 2004.
