
As the temperature increases in the summer season, the risk of heat stroke also increases. Heat stroke is a serious condition caused by excessive increase in body temperature (40°C or more). IMD has recently issued a heat wave alert in states like Rajasthan, Gujarat including Delhi. In such a situation, it is very important to understand how to avoid heat stroke due to extreme heat.
Symptoms of Heat Stroke
Symptoms of heat stroke can appear suddenly or gradually. These should be identified and treated immediately-
- Increase in body temperature- The most important symptom of heat stroke is the body temperature rising to 40°C or more. In this condition, sweating may stop because the body's cooling process fails.
- Severe headache and dizziness- Due to heat, there is a lack of water in the body, which can cause problems like headache, dizziness or fainting.
- Skin becomes red and hot- In heat stroke, the skin becomes red, dry and hot. If sweating stops, it is a serious sign.
- Nausea and vomiting- Excessive heat can cause problems like stomach irritation, nausea or vomiting.
- Muscle cramps – Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance can cause pain or cramps in the arms and legs .
- Increased heart rate: In heat stroke, the heart rate increases as the body works harder to cool itself.
- Confusion or unconsciousness- In severe cases, the patient may experience confusion, restlessness or even unconsciousness. In such a situation, a doctor should be contacted immediately.
Tips to avoid heat stroke
Drink plenty of water
- Make sure to drink 8-10 glasses of water throughout the day.
- Coconut water, buttermilk, lemon water and ORS solution are also beneficial.
- Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol, as they increase dehydration.
Wear light and loose clothes
- Wear cotton and light colored clothes, which can absorb sweat.
- Use a hat, umbrella or sunglasses when going out in the sun.
Don’t stay in the sun for too long
- Avoid going out in the sun between 12 noon and 3 pm .
- If it is necessary to go out, walk in the shade and take rest in between.
- When you go out, always carry a bottle of water with you.

- Keep your body cool by staying under AC, cooler or fan.
- If you feel too hot, take a bath with cold water or wipe your body with a wet cloth.
Eat light and healthy food
- Eat fresh fruits, vegetables, yogurt and light food.
- Do not eat fried, spicy and heavy food.
Do the exercise with caution
- Exercise only in the morning or evening.
- If you sweat a lot, drink water immediately and take rest.
Take special care of the elderly and children
- Small children and elderly people are at greater risk of heat stroke, so keep them in a cool environment.
