Air Pollution During Diwali:  Air pollution is a big problem for patients of asthma and other respiratory diseases. Due to pollution, harmful particles and gases present in the air damage the respiratory tract and cause difficulty in breathing. In such a situation, protection from pollution is very important for these patients. Especially at the time of Diwali, when the level of pollution in the air increases further due to firecrackers. Therefore, during this festival, patients of asthma or any other respiratory disease need to be more careful (Asthma Patients Diwali Tips). Here we will try to know about how these people can have more trouble due to pollution and how to protect against it (Asthma Care Diwali 2024).

Effects of Air Pollution

  • Asthma attacks – Pollution can trigger an asthma attack.
  • Difficulty in breathing- Pollution causes difficulty in breathing, especially during physical activity.
  • Deterioration of lung function – Long-term exposure to pollution can damage the lungs .
  • Increased risk of infection- Pollution weakens the immune system, which increases the risk of infection.

How to protect yourself from air pollution?

To avoid these effects of pollution, we spoke to Dr. Pratibha Dogra (Senior Consultant – Pulmonologist and Sleep Medicine, Maringo Asia Hospital Gurugram). Let's know what she said about this.

  • Stay away from firecrackers- The smoke and chemicals emitted from firecrackers can make asthma and other respiratory diseases more severe. So stay away from places where firecrackers are bursting or there is a lot of smoke. Try to celebrate Diwali inside the house with your family members only. Even when the pollution is high, stay inside the house, do not go out.
  • Wear a mask- Wear an N95 mask before going out. This will filter the dust and smoke outside and you will be less harmed by pollution.
  • Keep an inhaler with you- Always keep medicine and an inhaler with you for emergency. If you suddenly have trouble breathing, then keeping an inhaler with you can be helpful in that situation.
  • Stay hydrated- Drink lots of water. Water keeps the respiratory tract moist, which prevents the mucus layer from becoming too thick. This will reduce the trouble from dust and smoke.
  • Reduce physical activity- Minimize activities that require a lot of physical effort or going out. Pollution puts a lot of stress on the lungs. This can cause a lot of harm to your health. So avoid doing this. Do light exercises inside the house.
  • Purify the air of the house- Use air purifier inside the house , keep the windows and doors closed in the evening and morning. Plant indoor plants inside the house. This will reduce pollution inside your house.
