In the ongoing campaign against drug trafficking, the government has achieved another major success. In a major anti-drug operation, the Indian Coast Guard seized a ship carrying 6000 kg of banned methamphetamine near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and arrested six Myanmar nationals.

The biggest consignment ever

This narcotic substance was found packed in about 3000 packets weighing two kilograms each, which is worth several crores of rupees in the international market. This is the biggest consignment of drugs ever caught in the country. Earlier, the biggest drug seizure took place in September 2021 at Mundra port in Gujarat, where about 3,000 kg of heroin was seized.

A large consignment was also caught in Gujarat

Let us tell you that on the 14th of this month, in a joint operation, the Narcotics Control Bureau, Navy and Gujarat ATS seized 700 kg of methamphetamine from the international maritime area near Gujarat and arrested eight Iranian citizens. Apart from this, the Narcotics Control Bureau seized 82.53 kg of cocaine worth about Rs 900 crore in Delhi on the same day.

Suspicious ship activity observed

Defence officials said on Monday that during a routine patrol on November 23, the pilot of a Coast Guard Dornier aircraft noticed suspicious activity of a fishing vessel near Barren Island, which is about 150 km from Port Blair. The vessel was warned and asked to reduce its speed.

Six Myanmar citizens arrested

Meanwhile, the pilot informed the Andaman and Nicobar Command about this. The officer said that immediately our nearest patrol ship left for Baron Island and took the fishing vessel to Port Blair on November 24 for further investigation. We have arrested six Myanmar citizens on board the vessel.

confiscated contraband material

The methamphetamine is believed to be meant for smuggling to India and its neighbouring countries. We have informed the Andaman and Nicobar police for joint interrogation. This is not the first time that such contraband has been seized in Indian waters in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Similar narcotics were seized from foreign ships in 2019 and 2022 as well when they were trying to enter Indian waters.
