Air Pollution Health Tips:  Air pollution has become a serious problem across the world today. It not only affects our respiratory system, but can also deeply affect our reproductive system. Now the question arises that how and how can we protect ourselves from it (Air Pollution Prevention Tips)? To know the answer to this question, we spoke to Dr. Aastha Dayal (Director-Obstetrics and Gynecology, C.K. Birla Hospital, Gurugram). Let's know what she told (Tips for Fertility Protection).

How can air pollution affect fertility?

Dr. Dayal says that air pollution can affect the fertility of both men and women. Pollutants such as PM2.5 particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide can affect reproductive health. These include hormonal imbalances, reduced quality of sperm and eggs.

How does air pollution affect male fertility?

  • Deterioration in sperm quality – Harmful particles and chemicals present in air pollution can reduce sperm count and quality.
  • Decreased testosterone levels – Air pollution can lower testosterone levels , which is important for men's sexual desire and reproductive ability.
  • DNA damage – Chemicals present in air pollution can damage the DNA of sperm, increasing the risk of abortion and congenital diseases.

How does air pollution affect women's fertility?

  • Decreased egg quality – Air pollution can reduce egg quality and increase the risk of premature ovarian failure.
  • Hormonal imbalance – Air pollution can cause hormonal imbalance in women, which may lead to irregular menstruation and ovulation.
  • Risk of miscarriage: Exposure to air pollution for a long time during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage.
  • Low birth weight – Exposure to air pollution can cause the baby to be born low in weight and have delayed physical development.

How can we protect ourselves from this?

To reduce the effects of pollution on the reproductive system, try to minimise your exposure to air pollution. Avoid outdoor activities like exercising or walking outside, especially during peak pollution hours. Also, use air purifiers at home to reduce pollutants in the house. Also, include antioxidant-rich fruits, vegetables and nuts in your diet. These help reduce oxidative stress caused by pollution. Couples who want to conceive should completely stop smoking and drinking alcohol, as these can further increase the damage caused by pollution.
