Kallakurichi. The death toll due to consumption of poisonous liquor in Tamil Nadu is increasing. Health Minister and DMK leader Subramaniam Ma said that 50 people have died so far due to consumption of poisonous liquor containing methanol in the Kallakurichi liquor tragedy that occurred on June 19. 

50 died due to poisonous liquor

The Health Minister met the victims of the Kallakurichi liquor tragedy at the Government Medical College and Hospital and enquired about the treatment being given to them.

Subramanian said a total of 185 people were admitted to four hospitals, Kallakurichi Hospital, JIPMER Hospital in Puducherry, Salem Government Hospital and Viluppuram Government Hospital, of whom 117 are undergoing treatment. So far, 50 people have died. 

Announcement of giving assistance amount of 10 lakhs

The minister said that the Chief Minister has taken immediate action in the incident. Today we met the people admitted in Jipmer Hospital, Salem Hospital and Kallakurichi Hospital in Puducherry. The Chief Minister has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives. 

The government will bear the expenses of the orphaned children: CM

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday said the state government will bear the full education and hostel expenses of children who lost either or both of their parents in the Kallakurichi liquor tragedy. Speaking in the Assembly, the Chief Minister said the incident that took place in Kallakurichi on June 19 was "painful". 

three accused in judicial custody

Earlier, three accused in the Kallakurichi illicit liquor case were sent to 15 days judicial custody and taken to Cuddalore Central Jail. Kallakurichi police produced the accused before the District Combined Court. The three accused, named Govindaraj, Damadoran and Vijaya, have been sent to 15 days judicial custody till July 5 by District Court Judge Sriram.
