
Nairobi. So far 39 people have lost their lives in anti-government protests against new tax hikes in Kenya. According to ANI, protesters are gearing up for a new round of protests in Kenya this week. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) announced the death toll on Monday.
According to KNCHR records, 39 people have been killed and 361 injured in relation to nationwide tax law protests in Kenya, Al Jazeera reports. There have been 32 cases of enforced or involuntary disappearances and 627 arrests of protesters, Al Jazeera reports.
People are very angry due to imposition of new taxes
The public in Kenya is very angry due to the new tax imposed by the government and protests are being organized on a large scale. In this episode, on Tuesday, the crowd entered the Parliament and set it on fire. After this, the MPs were safely evacuated from the Parliament building. The protesters are opposing the new tax which will increase the price of items like diapers.

Notably, it is the most serious crisis facing President William Ruto's government since he took office in September 2022 after a deeply divisive election in a country often regarded as a beacon of stability in the troubled region. Ruto said in a television interview on Sunday that 19 people had died in the protests, but insisted the deaths would be investigated.
The human rights body said the KNCHR condemns in the strongest possible terms the disproportionate violence and force used against protesters, medical personnel, lawyers, journalists, and protected places such as churches, medical emergency centres and ambulances.
People are protesting against the new tax
The protesters are opposing new taxes, including an eco-levy, which will increase the price of items like diapers. However, the proposal to impose a tax on bread was dropped after public protests. India has also issued an advisory for its citizens in Kenya after protests against the tax hike turned violent, leading to chaos in the African nation.
