News Topical, Digital Desk : Venezuela's military announced that at least 24 Venezuelan security officers were killed in a U.S. military operation Saturday, bringing the official death toll to 56. More civilians were reportedly killed in the attacks, but the number was unclear.

Venezuela's Attorney General, Tarek William Saab, said on Tuesday that dozens of officers and civilians had been killed and that prosecutors would investigate the deaths, which he called "war crimes."

He did not clarify whether this estimate referred specifically to Venezuelans. The figure is in addition to the Cuban government's announcement on Sunday that 32 Cuban military and police officers serving in Venezuela were killed in the operation, prompting a two-day mourning period on the Caribbean island.

Description of the operation

The night raid, ordered by US President Donald Trump, took place at Maduro's Fort Tiuna residence in Caracas. With the help of more than 150 US planes, helicopters, and Delta Force, the air defenses were neutralized and the Maduro couple was captured and taken to New York, where they are facing trial on narco-terrorism and drug trafficking charges. Trump called it an "amazing military achievement" and said the US would now "run" Venezuela and rebuild its oil resources.
