New Delhi: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is preparing to celebrate Kukur Tihar festival in Bengaluru on October 17. This festival is also known as the festival of dogs. Celebrated every year on October 17 in Bengaluru, the event aims to raise awareness about their positive roles in society as well as recognize the valuable contributions of dogs.

Kukur Tihar is a traditional festival of Nepal dedicated to the honor and worship of dogs. According to reports, the animal husbandry department of BBMP will launch several initiatives under the #BITEFREELOCALITY campaign. These programs aim to prepare "coexistence champions" who will promote a compassionate environment for animals.

It will help in understanding the behavior of animals

These initiatives will not only address animal birth control and vaccination but will also emphasise the importance of understanding animal behaviour and recognising dogs as an integral part of nature, the report said.

Suralkar Vikas Kishore, special commissioner of welfare at the BBMP, said dogs are often looked upon with fear due to concerns about bites and attacks, but such events will highlight their loyalty, obedience, protectiveness, etc.

What is its purpose?

Suralkar Vikas Kishore, special commissioner of welfare at the BBMP, said:

This initiative aims to change the narrative by celebrating the positive roles dogs play in society.

This will encourage residents to share their heart-warming stories and experiences with street dogs.'

On the same day, the BBMP took the initiative to enlist people from four wards to help feed community dogs, interacting with restaurants, where these workers will ensure that the leftover food is distributed to street dogs. The plan aims to expand this effort, connecting more restaurants with caretakers to guarantee consistent feeding.

Trial plan also started

Recently, the BBMP also launched a trial scheme aimed at improving tracking and management of street dogs in the Matikere and Malleswaram areas of the city.
