News Topical, Digital Desk : Early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease can be detected by getting regular eye checkups. This information has come to light from a study done on mice. This study has been published in a journal named Alzheimer's and Dementia. Regarding this research done by American researchers, experts said that our retina (eye membrane) can be an important and strong indicator (biomarker) for neurodegenerative diseases.
The study also found that abnormal changes were seen in the blood vessels in the retinas of the mice and these changes were linked to a specific gene variant. This is the same gene that helps predict the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Disease can be detected by looking at retina
Elena Rezan, the lead researcher of the study, said that this discovery is important because if an eye specialist sees abnormal changes in your retina, it can indicate that something is going wrong in your brain as well. In such a situation, the disease can be detected at an early stage.
Gives early indication of Alzheimer's
Researchers said that the retina is actually a part of the central nervous system. It is considered an extension of the brain, because both the retina and the brain are made of the same tissue. According to Rezan, changes in the blood vessels in the retina can give early indications of brain health and diseases like Alzheimer's.
The effect is the same
He said that the retina is actually like a window to your brain. The only difference is that the doctor can look inside directly through the pupil of the eye. Just like your brain, the eyes also have the same tissues, the same nerves and the same blood vessels. This is the reason why the effect of pressure or problem on both is almost the same.
What was the process?
- During the study, the rats were found to have twisted blood vessels, swollen arteries, and fewer branches in the retina at six months of age.
- These signs indicate that blood flow to the brain is decreasing and the risk of weakening of thinking ability is increasing.
- Researchers said that excessively twisted or missing blood vessels indicate problems such as high blood pressure. This is because when the arteries become narrowed, essential nutrients and oxygen cannot reach the brain properly.
- According to researchers, the changes seen in blood vessels in the retina are similar to those seen in conditions like dementia in the brain.
- This means that the problem may not be limited to just the brain or the eye, but rather may be a systemic disorder involving the entire body.
