News Topical, Digital Desk : Blood Transfusion Mistakes: Blood is an essential part of our body, and the human body contains different blood groups. Some are transfused with blood from those with A+, while others are not. But have you ever wondered what would happen if someone with B+ blood is given a transfusion? Would that person die? Let us explain the truth behind this: what happens to a person if they receive a transfusion from another blood group?

Understand this first

The blood group of every person is determined on the basis of his antigens and antibodies. According to the American Red Cross, people with A+ blood have A antigens and anti-B antibodies in their blood. Similarly, in B+ blood, on the contrary, B antigens and anti-A antibodies are found. Now let us come to the question, what happens if a different blood group is transfused into someone else's body. According to the National Institutes of Health, if an A+ person is mistakenly given B+ blood, the anti-B antibodies present in his blood attack the B antigen of the transfused B blood. This causes the red blood cells to burst. This entire process is called Acute Hemolytic Transfusion Reaction (AHTR) in medical language.

What could be the problem?

Experts and various medical organizations state that this can lead to numerous complications. The condition can become serious within minutes. Patients experience symptoms such as high fever, chills, dark urine, back pain, low blood pressure, and difficulty breathing. While doctors can control the situation with medication in many cases, the risk of complications still remains. Before a blood transfusion, cross-matching is performed in every hospital, where the compatibility of the patient's and donor's blood is checked. If any problem is found during this process, the transfusion is stopped. Simply put, to avoid any inaccurate blood typing, samples are cleared only after double-checking from donor to patient.
