A 10 month old child has been diagnosed with polio
A 10-month-old child born during the war has been diagnosed with polio. The child, named Abdel-Rahman Abuel-Jedian, started crawling at an early age. Then one day, he suddenly froze, his left leg appearing paralyzed.
According to the World Health Organization, the child is the first confirmed case of polio inside Gaza in 25 years.
suddenly stopped walking
"Abdel-Rahman was an energetic child but suddenly he stopped crawling, stopped moving, stopped standing," the child's mother, Navin Abuel-Jedian, said sobbing.
A warning had already been given
Healthcare workers in Gaza have been warning for months about the possibility of a polio outbreak, as Israel's assault on the Strip worsens the humanitarian crisis. Abdel-Rahman's case confirms health workers' fears.
Before the war, Gaza children were widely vaccinated against polio, the World Health Organization says. But Abdel-Rahman was not vaccinated because he was born just before October 7, when Hamas militants attacked Israel and Israel retaliated against Gaza, forcing his family to flee immediately. Hospitals were attacked and routine vaccinations for newborns were virtually stopped.
