Beirut: Israel's intelligence agency Mossad has shocked Hezbollah by carrying out thousands of pager blasts simultaneously in Lebanon. 11 people have lost their lives in these attacks and 4000 fighters have been injured. This is the first time in the world that blasts have been carried out using pagers. But the question is why was Hezbollah using an old device like a pager in the age of smartphones?
Pager lasted for a few months in India?
Hezbollah had bought the latest models of pagers in February this year. The first blast in these pagers took place at around 3:45 pm local time. After this, the series of blasts continued for about an hour. Before the advent of mobile phones in the 1990s, the use of pagers was very popular as a means of communication.
In the 90s, pagers were used in India for a few months. After that, it was discontinued. This is the reason why the popularity of pagers did not increase in India. People also know less about it. Apart from Lebanon, pagers are used in many countries including America, Britain, France, Canada, and in other services including health.
Why was Hezbollah using pagers?
In February this year, Hezbollah decided to use pagers instead of smartphones. The logic behind this was to avoid Israeli spying through smartphones, because it is very difficult to spy on any person and track location through pagers. After this, Hezbollah ordered 5,000 pagers. But Mossad had put explosives in these pagers.
What is a pager and how does it work?
Pager is known as beeper. It is a small portable communication device. This device works on wireless technology. In this you can receive both text and voice messages. This device receives radio signals on specific frequencies of VHF and UHF bands. The battery of the pager is very durable. Pager can be used even when there is no mobile phone network.
