News Topical, Digital Desk : The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) held an important meeting on Wednesday, January 7. This was the third meeting of the 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee. Three bills were discussed at the meeting. These bills relate to the Chief Minister and Prime Minister who run the government while being held behind bars for 30 consecutive days.
The JPC held a review meeting for about three hours on these three bills - the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2025, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
Will the government be run from jail?
After the JPC meeting, committee chairperson Aparajita Sarangi said that invitations were also sent to some political parties to attend the meeting, but surprisingly they refused to come.
Aparajita Sarangi further stated that the Modi government wants to remain within the law, while some political parties want to operate outside the law. Sarangi further stated that running a government from prison is a grave insult to democracy.
In the meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee, an MP from the opposition party raised the demand that MPs from opposition parties should also be called to give suggestions and present their views on this bill.
The bill was introduced by Amit Shah.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced these three bills in the Lok Sabha in August 2025. According to these bills, if the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or any Union/State Minister is arrested in any serious criminal case and remains in custody for 30 consecutive days after arrest, they must resign from their position on the 31st day of their arrest. Even if the minister does not resign, they will automatically be removed from office.
