News Topical, Digital Desk : A long-standing border dispute between Pakistan and Afghanistan has erupted into full-scale fighting. Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has declared open war against the Afghan Taliban government. Islamabad has launched airstrikes on major Afghan cities, including Kabul and Kandahar.

Following Pakistan's action against Afghanistan, Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif posted on X, “Our patience has reached its limit. Now there is open war between us (Pakistan) and you (Afghanistan).”

Taliban confirmed the attack

Meanwhile, the Taliban government also confirmed the airstrikes but said there were no casualties. "Following the airstrikes in Kabul, Kandahar and other provinces, massive retaliatory action was launched again from Kandahar and Helmand against Pakistani military positions," Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on Xinhua.

Pakistan has confirmed its attacks on Afghanistan. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar posted, “Afghan Taliban defense positions in Kabul, Paktia (province) and Kandahar were targeted.”

Dozens of casualties reported

Both armies have reported dozens of casualties in the ongoing violence along the border, which has escalated following several clashes and airstrikes in recent months. AFP journalists in Kabul heard the sound of jets and several loud explosions, followed by gunfire for more than two hours.

Afghan officials reported eight soldiers killed during the ground attack, while civilians were injured near the Torkham border post. "A mortar shell hit the camp and unfortunately seven of our refugees were injured, while one woman is in critical condition," said Nangarhar provincial information chief Qureshi Badlun.

Tension continues on Pak-Afghanistan border

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan continue. Pakistani state media and sources have confirmed that the Pakistan Air Force carried out massive airstrikes tonight (February 27, 2026) against several key Taliban military positions in Afghanistan as part of Operation Ghazab Lil Haq. 72 Taliban fighters are reported to have been killed in the operation.
