News Topical, Digital Desk : Have you ever thought that a scorpion's venom can help save lives? Yes, it may sound strange, but Brazilian scientists have made a discovery (Brazilian Scientists Cancer Research) that can revolutionize the treatment of breast cancer. Let us tell you, they have found a molecule in scorpion venom (Scorpion Venom Breast Cancer Cure) that can be as effective as chemotherapy in eliminating breast cancer cells.

Life-giving element hidden in poison

A research team from the University of Sao Paulo studied it in detail. According to Professor Eliane Candiani Arantes, head of the team, this molecule was identified through bioprospecting (discovery of medicines from natural sources). This molecule was found to be effective against breast cancer cells.

Initial research results show that this peptide is capable of destroying cancer cells - in a similar way to chemotherapy. It kills cells primarily through necrosis, which means the cells burst and die.

How to remove the poison without harming the scorpion?

Scientists told another surprising thing- for this research, venom was not extracted from scorpions. Instead, they adopted a special technique called heterologous expression. In this process, the necessary gene is inserted into organisms like yeast or bacteria, so that they can produce the necessary protein in large quantities in the lab.

Professor Arantes said that now their next step is to produce BamazScplp1 and other effective molecules in larger quantities using the same process. For this, they are using a yeast called Pichia pastoris.

1 in every 20 women is at risk of breast cancer

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women and the second most common cancer overall. A study found that 1 in every 20 women worldwide is at risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime.

In 2022 alone, about 23 lakh new cases of breast cancer were reported and 6.7 lakh deaths occurred. By 2050, this figure may increase to 32 lakh new cases and 11 lakh deaths annually. Let us tell you, this disease affects women above 50 years of age the most, who account for 71% of new cases and 79% of deaths.

This discovery is still in its early stages and will require many more tests and trials, but it has certainly raised a new hope. If this molecule made from scorpion venom really has the power of chemotherapy, then it could one day revolutionize the treatment of breast cancer, that too with fewer side effects.
