News Topical, Digital Desk : In Hinduism, Lord Ganesha is considered a symbol of wisdom, discretion, and humility. Meanwhile, the god Kubera is said to be the lord of wealth and prosperity. However, there came a time when Lord Ganesha shattered the pride of Kubera, who was intoxicated with his wealth. This incident is described in the Shiva Purana and the Skanda Purana.
According to the story, Lord Kubera possessed immense wealth, which made him extremely proud of his riches and opulence. He felt that no one was as wealthy as him. Driven by this pride, he invited Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati to a lavish feast on Mount Kailash. His intention was to display his wealth. Lord Shiva understood Kubera's intention. He refused to go himself and offered to send young Ganesha to the feast on his behalf. Kubera, realizing that a child could only eat so much food, was relieved.
When Lord Ganesha reached Kubera's palace
When Ganesha arrived at Kubera's palace, Kubera arranged for him to eat a heaping array of delicious dishes. But as Ganesha ate, his hunger only grew. He devoured each dish one after another. Yet, his hunger remained unsatisfied.
Lord Ganesha then announced that food was running low. Kubera panicked and ordered food from the entire city, but all in vain. Finally, when his hunger remained unsatisfied, he began eating all the wealth, riches, and treasures of Kubera's palace. Within moments, Kubera was completely depleted.
What solution did Goddess Parvati give to Lord Kubera?
Finally, a distraught Kubera approached Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and begged for forgiveness. Goddess Parvati offered him a simple roasted rice. When the rice was offered to Ganesha, his hunger was immediately satiated. Lord Ganesha then explained to Kubera that wealth should be used for service and righteousness, not for vanity. Kubera realized his mistake and humbly apologized.
