News Topical, Digital Desk : Mantra practice holds special significance in Hinduism, and among them, the Gayatri Mantra is considered supreme. According to the Brahmavaivarta Purana, chanting the Gayatri Mantra not only provides peace to the mind, but it is also an infallible weapon that destroys a person's accumulated sins.
Number of chants and destruction of sins
In the 23rd chapter of the Brahmavaivarta Purana , Prakriti Khanda, Maharishi Parashara explains in detail to King Ashwapati the effects of the Gayatri Mantra and the power of chanting it. According to him, the absolution of sins is based on the number of repetitions:
- Chanting once: Chanting Gayatri Mantra just once destroys the sins committed during the entire day.
- Chanting 10 times: If a person chants 10 times, his sins of the day and night (full 24 hours) are mitigated.
- Chanting 100 times: Chanting the mantra 100 times absolves the sins committed during a month.
- Chanting 1000 times: Chanting 1000 times destroys all the sorrows of the entire year.
- One lakh and more: Chanting one lakh times erases the sins of the current birth, while chanting ten lakh times destroys the sins of the previous three births.
- Chanting in crores: By chanting one crore times, the sins of all the births are erased and by chanting ten crore times, a person gets liberated from the cycle of birth and death and attains salvation.
King Ashwapati's penance and the birth of Sati Savitri
King Ashwapati of Madhya Pradesh was truthful and his wife Malati was a devout woman, but they were deprived of the happiness of having children. Following the advice of Maharishi Vashistha, he began worshipping Savitri Devi (Gayatri). Eventually, he went to Pushkar Tirtha and performed rigorous penance there for 100 years. Pleased with his devotion, Goddess Gayatri appeared before him and blessed him with a daughter. This daughter later became known as "Sati Savitri."
Correct method of chanting
To reap the full benefits of a mantra, it is essential to chant it with the correct rituals. What should be done while chanting:
- One should sit facing east.
- Chanting should be done by slightly bending the head and making the palm of the hand in the 'semi-printed serpentine shape' (like the shape of a snake's hood).
- For chanting, it is said that the use of white lotus seeds or crystal rosary is best.
