News Topical, Digital Desk : The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for the murder of British Columbia-based Indian-origin industrialist Darshan Singh Sahasi.
Bishnoi gang member Goldy Dhillon claimed in a social media post that he killed Sahasi for his alleged involvement in drug trafficking and for refusing to pay them. Sahasi, a Punjabi-Canadian businessman, was murdered outside his Abbotsford home on the morning of October 27.
Who was Darshan Singh Sahasi?
Darshan Singh Sahasi, a native of Rajgarh village in Punjab's Ludhiana district, immigrated to Canada in 1991 and worked in odd jobs before buying a stake in Canam International, a textile recycling unit.
He was the Chairman of Canam International, a globally renowned textile recycling company known for its transparent and sustainable business model.
Canam advocates for the reuse and downcycling of clothing, a circular clothing economy. According to information on the company's website, this involves processing approximately half a million pounds of clothing daily.
His company employed many people of Punjabi origin, and he also had a business in Kandla, Gujarat. Sahasi was actively involved in social and philanthropic activities.
How was Darshan Singh Sahasi murdered?
Initial investigations indicate that the attacker was waiting for Sahasi to arrive in his car parked on the sidewalk outside Sahasi's home. As Sahasi got into his car, the attacker, standing in another car across the street, fired several shots and fled the scene.
The Abbotsford Police Department received a report of the shooting at approximately 9:22 a.m. and upon arriving at the scene, they found the businessman in critical condition. Rescuers reportedly attempted to revive the businessman, but he was unable to be revived.
During the incident, three nearby schools were placed under precautionary "shelter-in-place" protocols, and everyone was asked to remain inside the building. No students were harmed. The murder investigation is ongoing.
