News Topical, Digital Desk : An event was organized at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US on Thursday, in which an American-Indian student was barred from participating. The student's name is Megha Vemuri.

The reason for stopping her from attending the event has a connection with Palestine. Actually, Megha had recently given a speech in support of Palestine, after which the university banned her from attending the event.

Banned from graduation ceremony

Megha Vemuri is the president of the MIT 2025 class and was scheduled to be the event marshal at the graduation ceremony, but University Chancellor Melissa Nobles announced that Megha will no longer be a part of the program.

According to the Boston Globes, the chancellor sent an email to Megha that read, "You intentionally and repeatedly misled the organizers. While we acknowledge your right to freedom of expression, your decision to lead the protest from the stage, defacing an institute function, was a violation of MIT's time, place, and manner campus rules for expression."

What did Megha say in her speech?

When Megha arrived to give a speech at the event, she was wearing a red keffiyeh. It was like a scarf which is used to show support for Palestine.

In her speech, Megha criticized Israel and the university's ties with Israel and asked her fellow graduating students to take a stand for Gaza.

“The Israeli occupation army is the only foreign military with which MIT has a research relationship, meaning that Israel’s assault on the Palestinian people is aided and abetted not just by our country, but also by our school,” Megha said.

“We are watching Israel try to wipe Palestine off the face of the earth, and it’s a shame that MIT is a part of that,” he said.

Who is Megha Vemuri?

Megha Vemuri was born in Alpharetta, Georgia. She attended Alpharetta High School and graduated in 2021. The same year, Megha took admission in MIT. At MIT, she completed her undergraduate degree in computer science, neuroscience and linguistics, serving as president of the graduating class.
