News Topical, Digital Desk : On June 23, Qatar successfully destroyed the missiles fired by Iran on the US military base Al Udeid Airbase in Qatar. This attack took place after the US retaliated on Iranian nuclear bases and is considered a major turning point in the Iran-Israel conflict.
Although the scale of the attack was large, there was no major loss of life or property due to the quick and coordinated action of Qatar and the US. Due to the alertness of 159 American and Qatari soldiers, a major catastrophe was averted.
Qatar-led campaign
At 7 pm, Qatar's military surveillance system detected missiles fired from Iran, which were headed towards Al Udeid airbase, reports CNN. According to Brigadier General Jassim al Ansari, the operation was led by Qatar but carried out in conjunction with US forces.
300 Qatari troops were immediately activated and Patriot missile defense systems were deployed at two different locations. According to Qatar, a total of 19 missiles were fired, 7 over the Persian Gulf and 11 over the city of Doha itself. Only one missile fell into an empty part of the airbase, causing minor damage.
Qatar expressed displeasure
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Arazi said the attack was carried out in a way that no civilians were harmed. Iran's National Security Council also said the attack was "not a threat to a friendly country like Qatar."
But Qatari military official Al Ansari rejected these claims. "We will never risk the lives of our people for any political gain. This attack was shocking even for us."
After this attack, Qatar called it a violation of its sovereignty and condemned it in strong words. US President Donald Trump called it a very weak response.
Iran's response to US attack on nuclear sites
A day before this attack, the US carried out precision bombing on three major nuclear sites in Iran (such as Fordo). Satellite images showed damage to these sites. However, Iran claimed that it had already removed important nuclear material from there.
The number of missiles fired by Iran was kept equal to the number of bombs dropped by America. According to analysts, this attack was a symbolic response from Iran, which wanted to send a message to America without direct confrontation.
