News Topical, Digital Desk : A major alert has been issued regarding the increasingly popular weight loss drugs in India. Experts have expressed concern, particularly over the increasing use of GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) drugs. Renowned cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director of Medanta Hospital, has described the use of these drugs without a doctor's advice as dangerous. He says that these drugs are not lifestyle products, but are designed to treat serious diseases.

In fact, after the recent patent expiration, cheap generic versions of these drugs have become widely available in India. This has led to a rapid increase in their sales through online pharmacies and wellness clinics. The trend of rapid weight loss on social media has also fueled their demand, leading people to use them without proper information.

The government tightened

The government has begun cracking down on this growing trend. Raids were conducted at 49 locations across the country, including warehouses, medical stores, and wellness centers. The investigation revealed that in many locations, these drugs were being sold without prescriptions or regulations were not being followed properly. Following this, the drug regulator has issued a clear warning that strict action will be taken against such activities.

What do the experts say?

According to Dr. Naresh Trehan, these medications are certainly effective for weight loss, but they also have significant side effects. If someone starts taking the medication on their own, the risks can increase significantly. Dr. Trehan clearly stated that such medications should not be readily available over-the-counter or online. He said that many people are using them, believing them to be an easy way to lose weight without exercise or diet, which can be extremely dangerous. Side effects of these medications include pancreatitis, nausea, vomiting, and liver damage, which can be serious.

People should also pay attention

Dr. Trehan stated that patients are responsible for using any medication only under the advice of a doctor. He warned people to avoid self-medication and prioritize expert supervision for any treatment to avoid potential risks. The government is now preparing to curb the promotion of these drugs, specifically, surrogate advertising and improper promotion. It is also proposed that only expert doctors should prescribe these drugs.
