News Topical, Digital Desk : Vodafone Idea (Vi) is now relying increasingly on Indian vendors, rather than foreign ones, for its 4G and 5G network expansion, the company has begun working with domestic technology partners like Tejas Networks, HFCL, and HCLTech to reduce costs and increase rollout speed. This move is part of a significant turnaround strategy for Vi, in which the company is localizing its network and accelerating its 5G rollout.

Vodafone Idea (Vi), grappling with debt and funding challenges, is now making a major shift in its network strategy. The company has begun prioritizing Indian companies for 4G and 5G infrastructure.

According to sources, Vi has begun trials of Tejas Networks' 4G and 5G wireless equipment in a single circle, and if performance is satisfactory, commercial orders could be placed soon.

A move towards a 'Made in India' network - A Vi official told Moneycontrol, "We want to work with Indian vendors wherever possible to reduce costs and achieve faster market penetration. Tejas' 4G and 5G equipment is currently under trial. If it meets our standards, we are ready to deploy it." The company already uses Tejas's Packet and Optical Transmission Gear and routers, and is now increasing order volumes. HCLTech is providing Self-Optimising Network (SON) technology to Vi, allowing the network to automatically optimize itself. HFCL has received an order to supply IP/MPLS routers that will power Vi's 5G network. Sanjay Malik, Chief Strategy and Business Officer, Tejas Networks, told Moneycontrol that the company is now actively engaging with private telecom operators. “BSNL is our major customer, but 2026 will be a crucial year for us when private telcos will also start adopting our network solutions. They have tested our 4G-5G stack and are satisfied with the results,” Malik said. The company is currently deploying 4G and 5G equipment in 17 primary circles to improve customer experience and reduce churn. Vi signed a $3.6 billion supply deal with Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung in 2024, which will be completed over the next three years. The company's capex guidance for FY26 is ₹7,500–8,000 crore, of which ₹5,000 crore has already been spent.

Vi is exploring various options for new funding, including banks, NBFCs, and strategic investors. In August 2025, the company began discussions for debt financing of ₹5,000 crore. Network expansion has completed 16,500 sites so far, and there are plans to add 8,000–10,000 new sites in the next two quarters.

Vi CEO Abhijit Kishore said in his Diwali message, " The launch of Vi 5G marks a new chapter of growth and transformation for us. We are delivering a faster and better network experience to millions of customers across India every day." Kishore explained that the company's AI-based network technology optimizes performance in real time and now reaches 1.2 billion people.
