Retinol has long been known to reverse ageing, but now Harvard researchers have proven that a daily dose of vitamin D can actually help preserve DNA and keep people biologically younger by up to three years, the study has now been published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
What does the study say?
During this research, the researchers conducted a trial called VITAL, in which more than 1,000 adults were monitored for four years. Scientists gave these people a dose of about 2,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D3 daily, which was about three times the normal daily dose, but less than its maximum dose of 4,000 IU.
The results that came out after doing this were quite surprising. In fact, DNA damage was seen to be much less in the participants taking vitamin D as compared to those who did not take supplements. In simple words, the people taking supplements looked three years younger than their age even after growing old.
How does Vitamin D reverse age?
The main focus of this study was telomeres, which are the protective covers at the ends of our DNA and get shorter with age. In the study, scientists found that the length of telomeres of those who were taking vitamin D3 daily was much better than those who did not take the supplement. Researchers believe that protecting telomeres from damage can slow down biological age.
How to use vitamin D safely?
Despite the results of the research, experts have cautioned against its excessive use. Most adults are advised to take 600 to 800 IU, while the generally recommended safe dose is between 1000-2000 IU. Consuming more than 4,000 IU can be harmful, causing calcium to accumulate in the blood, leading to hypercalcemia. Some people suffering from hypercalcemia may also experience nausea, kidney problems or calcium deposits.
