News Topical, Digital Desk : Vedanta Share Price The Delhi High Court has granted Vedanta a significant interim relief. The court has stayed the central government's directive requiring Vedanta to hand over the CB-OS/2 offshore oil block to ONGC.
The court directed both the Central Government and Vedanta to maintain the status quo regarding this offshore oil block.
Vedanta's arguments need to be considered. During the hearing of the case, the Delhi High Court dismissed the Central Government's objection regarding the maintainability of Vedanta's petition. The court stated that Vedanta's arguments against the refusal to extend the Production Sharing Contract (PSC) need to be considered. The High Court clarified that prima facie, this is a case in which a final decision cannot be made without hearing the company's arguments.
What is the entire matter? Vedanta was awarded a Production Sharing Contract (PSC) for the CB-OS/2 offshore oil block in 1998. This contract year expired in 2023. Vedanta applied for an extension of the PSC in 2021. The company claims that it has been granted five interim extensions previously. However, in September 2025, the central government rejected Vedanta's PSC extension request and issued instructions that the company cease petroleum operations, hand over the block to ONGC, and vacate the area.
Alleging a denial of hearing, Vedanta argued in court that it was not afforded a personal hearing before rejecting the PSC extension, which violates the principles of natural justice. On this basis, the company has challenged the government's decision. Following this interim order from the Delhi High Court, Vedanta's position on the CB-OS/2 offshore oil block remains intact, and the government will not be able to proceed with the transfer of the block to ONGC. In the next hearing, the court will consider in detail the validity of the PSC extension and the government's decision. This case raises important legal questions related to contract extensions, government policy, and the rights of private companies in the oil and gas sector.
