News Topical, Digital Desk : Defense cooperation between India and the United States is set to deepen. The US Department of State has approved the potential sale of two critical and high-precision military systems to India—the Javelin anti-tank missile system and Excalibur artillery projectiles. The approval came following a notification issued by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).
Sale of Javelin missile system cleared
The United States has approved the sale of the Javelin missile system to India, estimated to cost $45.7 million. This package includes :
- Javelin missiles
- Launch Units
- Accessories
- Technical and logistical support
Features of Javelin missile
Javelin is one of the world's most reliable fire-and-forget anti-tank missile systems. It targets armored vehicles, tanks, and fortified positions with extreme accuracy using a top-attack profile. High mobility, thermal guidance, and portability make it highly effective on the battlefield.
The induction of the Javelin system into the Indian Army will further strengthen the anti-armour capability of the infantry.
Sale of Excalibur projectiles also approved
In addition to the Javelins, the US has also agreed to the potential sale of Excalibur 155mm precision-guided artillery projectiles to India. The deal is estimated to be worth $47.1 million.
Key Features of Excalibur:
- GPS-Guided Precision Strike
- Range up to 40–50 km
- Less than 2 meters CEP (Circular Error Probable) on target
- Minimal collateral damage
This projectile is fully compatible with the Indian Army's existing artillery systems, particularly the M777 Ultra-Light Howitzer. This will significantly enhance the long-range precision strike capability of Indian artillery systems.
The growing scope of India-US defense cooperation
The approval of these two defense deals signals the strengthening of the strategic partnership between India and the United States. The induction of Javelin and Excalibur -:
- Will increase military capabilities on India's borders
- Will enhance the capability for precise and rapid action in modern warfare
- Will strengthen the strategic balance in the Indo-Pacific region
It should be noted that this approval is not yet a final contract. A formal agreement between India and the US Defense Ministry is still pending.
