
News Topical, Digital Desk : Typhoon Ragasa has made landfall in East Asia, affecting Hong Kong and parts of southern China. High alert has been issued in both countries. China has ordered the closure of schools and businesses in approximately 10 cities. Several flights have also been cancelled.
Typhoon Ragasa has already wreaked havoc in the Philippines. The severe storm toppled trees, ripped off roofs, and killed two people. Thousands of people, especially in the northern Philippines, have been sheltered in schools and evacuation centers.
Hong Kong issued an alert
According to the Hong Kong Meteorological Service, Typhoon Ragasa has also strengthened into a typhoon with winds of up to 121 miles (195 kilometers) per hour, and is moving westward across the South China Sea.
Hong Kong issued a high alert around 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday. Waves of up to 4-5 meters high were surging into the city. The frightening sight of the waves surging near tall buildings was easily visible.
14 killed in Taiwan
Typhoon Ragasa caused a lake to burst in Taiwan, killing 14 people. The storm is causing heavy rainfall in the surrounding areas. Rescue operations are underway in Taiwan.
260 people stranded
Typhoon Ragasa caused Taiwan's Old Barrier Lake to burst, causing widespread landslides and flash floods. 260 people are feared trapped in the disaster. Rivers in the area are also in spate. Rescue operations are underway to save survivors.
