News Topical, Digital Desk : Anti-government protests in Iran continue into their third week. Despite a crackdown, internet shutdowns, and massive arrests, people continue to take to the streets. Eyewitnesses have made serious allegations of security forces resorting to gunfire and hospitals being overflowing with bodies.

Protests spread across the country

According to eyewitnesses, violence has been reported in various cities across Iran. Protests have spread to all 31 provinces of the country. Two people reported that security forces armed with rifles killed several protesters, while another person saw bodies piled on top of each other in a hospital. According to a US-based human rights organization, at least 78 protesters have been killed so far and more than 2,600 people have been arrested.

Internet shutdown

To control the situation, Iranian authorities have shut down internet and phone services. Iran has been almost completely offline for more than 60 hours, making it difficult to understand the true situation inside the country. This internet blackout has limited information reaching the outside world.

Meanwhile, Iran's parliament speaker has warned the US that if Washington intervenes militarily, American military and commercial facilities will be targeted in retaliation. President Donald Trump has said the US is ready to help the Iranian people.
