News Topical, Digital Desk : At least 39 people were killed and 73 injured when a speeding train derailed in southern Spain on Sunday. Officials said the train veered off the tracks and collided with another oncoming train.

Spain's rail agency ADIF posted on its X handle that the evening train between Malaga and Madrid derailed and collided with another train travelling from Madrid to Huelva (another southern city in Spain).

Where did this incident happen?

The incident occurred at 5:40 p.m. GMT (11:10 p.m. IST) near the Adamuez station in Cordoba, Spain. The Iryo 6189 Malaga-to-Madrid train derailed at Adamuez and moved onto the adjacent track, ADIF reported. The train on the adjacent track was a Madrid-to-Huelva train, which also derailed.

Service is normal on these routes

High-speed rail services between Madrid and Andalusia have been disrupted following the incident. Meanwhile, commercial services between Madrid, Toledo, Ciudad Real, and Puertollano are operating normally. Ireo is an Italian-run private rail operator. Andalusia Emergency Services said on social media that all rail traffic has been halted and emergency services are arriving at the scene.

A similar train derailment occurred in Thailand earlier this week, when a crane collapsed and derailed a train. At least 39 people were killed and 73 injured.
